How to Invest in a More Modern Home Exterior

Jul 20, 2022

Your exterior does a whole lot for your property. It certainly has a practical need for maintenance – since it is the first defense against wind, rain, cold, and heat – but it is also essential for cosmetic reasons. Here’s where you might want to focus your investments.

Replace the Roof

The roof is arguably the most important part of the exterior. It needs to both look nice and provide a barrier between you and damaging weather. Your roof materials should be decided by your local climate, as well as your method of installing ventilation. If you live in an area frequented by hurricanes, for example, you need to make sure that the roof is sturdy enough to reasonably survive heavy winds, but also not so expensive that you’ll be losing a lot of money from damage every rainy season. Asphalt-composite shingles, metal shingles, standing seam metal roofing, wood shingles, clay tile, concrete tile, and synthetic slate tile are some of the more common roofing materials for residential homes in the United States.

Add New Siding

Siding is important to maintain if you want your house to be clean, presentable, and valuable, And while plain concrete outsides aren’t inherently terrible, it’s often better to pick a siding that provides an aesthetic freedom unavailable to concrete users. What image of the home do you want to project? Color and material are your two biggest choices. Wood siding, for example, provides a wonderful natural tone that can be used as the home’s sole outdoor color or as an accent. But wood siding doesn’t usually work in humid climates – so make sure to consider the inevitable weathering. Wood, metal, fiber cement, and vinyl are usually the picks for residential siding.

Yard Attention

Be careful not to get so caught up in the house exterior itself that you forget the yard! Both the backyard and front yard provide a valuable frame to the house itself. Aesthetically speaking, this is indispensable. Focus on cultivating plant life that will be both beautiful, environmentally friendly, and relatively easy to maintain. Lawns have long been demonstrated to be difficult to maintain and not friendly to the environment. Use tasteful and subtle decoration – water features, plentiful rock gardens, mulch, nighttime lights, and more – in order to make something special.

Your home’s exterior tells your friends, families, and neighbors exactly what you’re all about. When making your home the best it can be or preparing it for sale, your home’s appearance and current quality will make a big difference in value. So, invest what it deserves.
